Navigating through the rolling wheat fields of her father’s rural Kansas farm, fifteen year old Kristina Kelly longs for a life far away from her troubled home. Numbed by the silence of her parents, and haunted by memories of happier times, she dreams of the day she will be rescued from the emptiness contained within the walls of the old, tired farmhouse.
The following year, she believes salvation has come in the form of her older brother, Stephen. He offers her a fresh beginning in Southern California where the lights, the movements, and the sounds open her eyes to the beauty held within each and every day. Filled with the hope of a future, she embraces her new home and turns her back on the past.
An aspiring musician, Damon Thorpe is driven forward by the ghost who dwells in his memories. Having traveled halfway around the world in the pursuit of his dreams, he is finally close to achieving everything his heart desires—success, fame and fortune. ABOUT THE BOOK
Within what seemed to be the blink of an eye, the final night before his deployment arrived. Unwilling to waste one moment which could be spent dancing in his arms, Lily, with Gail in tow, raced to the hall hosting the evening’s USO dance. Upon their arrival, Gail immediately glided onto the floor in search of a lonely soldier who she might be able to cheer up while Lily nervously searched the room for a familiar face. After several moments, her eyes finally rested on his and they began to fill with tears. Believing her heart might very well burst within her chest, she fought the urge to beg him to stay. Lily laughed nervously and wiped at her tear-streaked cheeks, “My, my Lieutenant, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes.”
Without speaking a word, James grabbed her hand and pulled her outside. Moving silently down one busy street and then another, he finally came to a stop in front of his hotel. He pointed to the bench beside the door, and he asked her if she might sit with him for a little while.
Lily perched restlessly on the edge of the worn, wooden bench unaware of what to say. She wished she could tell him that she honestly believed everything was going to be alright. She wanted to say they would be together again soon. However, she could not seem to shake the uneasy feeling that her words would be untrue. She cleared her throat in a vain attempt to fight back the inevitable tears. She knew she would have to rely on faith. Looking directly into his deep, ocean-blue eyes, Lily declared, “I will wait for you, James…as long as it takes. I will pray every night for your safe return. Just please, promise me, you will come back. Promise me!”
